Juneau is situated along the shores of the Northern Inside Passage and is surrounded by islands and mountains. We enjoy a maritime snowpack with consistent snowfalls throughout the winter at tree-line and up. The majority of storms will range in temperatures from 25 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit, and dump a few feet of high water content snow between cycles.
Fat skis and snowboards turn thigh-burning cement into a creamy and playful delight (skis with a minimum of 100mm underfoot are highly recommended). This type of snow can cling to everything, and seems to defy the laws of physics by morphing the landscape into a rider’s dreamscape. As the water content percolates or evaporates through the snowpack it transforms from creamy snow into velvet powder within protected aspects. Helicopters allow us to search out these aspects for some damn fine Alaskan shralping.
